Music

What is it with music nowadays? The other day, I had G105 on while cleaning my room. In a span of 30 minutes, I heard some of the worst songs I have heard in a while. I'm not gonna say that I am perfectly clean when it comes to my language, but there is enough good music out there where profanity isn't necessary. As Christians, we should stand out from the world. I'm the first to say that I don't believe we have to listen to only Christian music. But like they say, garbage in, garbage out. I don't believe it's being a good witness to the world if we are driving down the road blaring T-Pain or Usher or something out our windows.

There's no style to music, either. There's a verse and/or two, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, and then chorus. I'm SICK of predictability when it comes to the music I am listening to. If people used to be able to write creative music, how come no one does anymore? I've gotten to where I don't even want to turn on the radio anymore because I know the music is going to be the same. I heard the new Gavin Degraw song 8 times in the same day...that's just pitiful.

I was talking to a coworker my dad's the other day, who is a total GnR, AC/DC fan. We were both complaining about how none of the pure old rock is ever played on the radio. All you here is "Stairway to Heaven" and songs like that...and to be honest, I'm starting to hate those songs now. We need a music revival of the good stuff.

Well, if you ask me (which you didn't, but that's okay), I think the artists today are doing one good thing--finding what the general population enjoys listening to and making that music, therefore making tons of cash. It's really smart, if you think about it.

Also frankly, I like some of the stuff today. Some of it may be predictable, some may be slightly filled with "not good stuff", and MOST of it is quite overplayed, but I still like it. But I tend to be open about music.

If you want some good old stuff, you can sometimes hear a lot on 96.1 if you listen frequently enough. Lately it seems as if every time I turn on the radio they are playing some Puddle of Mud or Nirvana, but they're pretty good about playing G&R, AC/DC, Van Halen, the Chili Peppers, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Motley Crue...more deep track stuff than just the hits of the hits like the River does.

yeah, many songs today are disgusting. and many are disturbing. and many are annoying. and there are several that are all three. some of it doesn't even sound like music- it sounds like one of my little brothers banging on pots and pans and screeming at the top of his lungs (which, incidentally, is one of his favorite hobbies).

by the way, what made you assume that everyone who is reading this blog is christian?

Jess: That's true. They are appealing to the general population...which is smart, however annoying for those of us who enjoy variety.

Why should we listen to it if it has bad stuff in it, though? We are becoming desensitized to music. I can recall when turning on G105 would shock me because of the language...and sadly, I can turn it on and not be shocked anymore. Listening to this stuff for pleasure sake is not worth it...there's plenty of good music out there with less "bad stuff" in it.

griffinrider: I agree with you about the music...it seems a lot like art, actually. With modern art, a 4 year old could draw something and it could be considered a famous work. And since I am a Christian, I am basing my entries off of that fact.

:D Tricky topic. Personally, I don't listen to contemporary music any more (Christian or not) because like you said, it's all so predictable. You have two or three verses, a bridge, and a chorus all packed into a small amount of time.
I eventually got so tired of it that I've started listening to film scores and music I'd gotten from computer games. (And surprisingly, my brothers like it and are beginning to do the same thing!)
I really like the film scores - they're all different lengths [from one-and-a-half to ten solid minutes] and so many moods that don't get old easily. In some you have a combo of electric guitars, cellos, bass drums, and harmonicas. Others sound like a typical orchestra, and some others sound like a 'pop' band [but different.] It's all pretty cool, IMHO.

That's a good point. I mean, that's what I've been doing ever since I was little. I like soundtracks and musicals. And you know Matt and I have been doing that lovely little exchange, so I'm enjoying stuff all over again. It just doesn't get as old, and really takes more talent to compose and perform.
